Once upon a time there was VMC: 20th century glassware
From February 8 to March 10, 2020
What is VMC?
First, Arthur Papon creates glasswareVMC around 1911. Then, an oven was built in 1928 and a large industrial store was added to it in 1933. Production therefore specialized in glass containers from the 1930s. Subsequently, an additional oven was completed installation in 1960. The factory flourished until 1970, then entered a period of serious crisis. This is why, to remedy this, an ultra-modern oven was built around 1985, ensuring a renewal for the company. Since 1970, this glassworks headed by Maurice Papon, who was then a former minister and former prefect, has experienced violent social crises, including the assassination of Pierre Maître in 1977, by an employer militia. During the further investigation, in 2012, the site is still in activity. The glassworks employed 1,650 workers in 1983, 1,280 in 1985 and 830 in 1991.
About the exhibition
The exhibition devoted to VMC, the famous Rémoise glassware allows you to discover a company that marked the twentieth century. Indeed, the latter was active from 1911 to 2009.
This exhibition which combines History and VMC objects (eg Verreries Mécaniques Champenoises) consists of various panels with photos and diagrams which will present the company. That is to say: historical evolution, glass work, the various services, innovations from 2 years – type 1989-90, working conditions, social struggles and a panel covering the experience of a young student.
As a result, many VMC products are also to be discovered or rediscovered: glasses, jars, vases, bowls, salad bowls … but also molds, catalogs, a workbook …
