By invitation, the great Reims banquets through their menus
Exhibition “Les Grands Banquets”
From February 11 to May 16, 2020
An exhibition which therefore highlights the royal feasts and the presidential banquets that took place in Reims. The rich collection of menus will therefore take place in the Carnegie library. For example, the menus brought back by Baron de Baye who attended the coronation of Tsar Nicolas II in 1896 to those made for banquets offered at the town hall on the occasion of the visit of the Presidents of the Republic during official visits and inaugurations of monuments from Reims.
There is no party without feast. However, one who followed the coronation ceremony should not be reduced to the dimension of mere retaliation. A ceremonial which is therefore rich in symbols gave it a par liturgical character – a royal supper – and feudal. The twelve peers of France, recalling the twelve apostles, represented the ecclesiastical and secular principalities; they appeared to be companions – in the etymological sense – of the sovereign whose crown they supported.
