From June 21 to September 22, 2019, this exhibition highlights the art of portraiture in the 17th century.
Both a propaganda tool and a vehicle for social affirmation, the portrait is available in bust, feet, profile, black and white, colours… Rare and unknown works by Colbert – whose 400th anniversary is being commemorated this year – but also by other influential men. The human figure in the guise of great portrait painters such as Robert Nanteuil, also born in Reims, invites us to discover the secrets of the mirror’s reflection. This exhibition takes us back to our own images, those of the past or selfies and other instant photographs of today. Portraits of anonymous people or of the human race ?
